ADVANCES IN EPILEPSY

The Advances in Epilepsy program is a weekend CME activity focused on the diagnosis, treatment and management of seizures. This intensive weekend is designed for neurologists and other health care professionals with an interest in clinical epilepsy. This is also an excellent opportunity for alumni of earlier programs to refresh their knowledge and learn of new developments in the field.

A CONCISE UPDATE
In one intensive weekend, participants hear concise lectures on the fundamental principles of the diagnosis and management of epilepsy as well as current advances in the field. Advances in Epilepsy participants attend case presentations and advance their knowledge of epilepsy through audiovisual conferences, lecture sessions and peer group discussions. Faculty members are available for individual consultation and group discussion. This educational activity is eligible for CME credit; see below.

AN INTENSIVE, REWARDING COURSE OF STUDY
The Advances in Epilepsy course is designed to have immediate, practical application and tangible benefits for the physician's practice. The basic principles of diagnosis, classification, and treatment of seizures, as well as the initiation, modification and discontinuation of drug therapy will be discussed in detail. Emphasis on the function and support systems for the epilepsy patient and the organizational framework of the epilepsy management team are given, and a notebook covering all material is presented to each member of the class.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates for the Advances in Epilepsy program must have a sincere desire to further their knowledge and expertise in the field of epilepsy management. To be considered for participation, candidates must submit an application and curriculum vitae to Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Please note that an application does not guarantee attendance.

A DISTINGUISHED FACULTY
The Advances in Epilepsy program is presented by distinguished guest speakers from around the country, along with the faculty and staff of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center of Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

LEARNER OBJECTIVES

  • Classify epileptic seizures and syndromes using the ILAE classification system.
  • Describe the use of available imaging tools and techniques to accurately diagnose seizures.
  • Explain the role of interaction, efficacy, mechanism of action, and adverse effects in the selection and management of anticonvulsant therapy.
  • Recognize the specific challenges and considerations involved when treating epilepsy in special patient populations such as women and the multiply handicapped.
  • List key clinical and pharmacological characteristics of new antiepileptic drugs.
  • Examine patient case studies and develop diagnoses and management plans based on patient history and diagnostic findings.
  • Recognize the possible link between depression, suicide, and epilepsy.
  • Discuss alternative approaches for intractable epilepsy.

Friday - Diagnosing the Patient with Epilepsy; Seizure Classification & Semiology; EEG Workshops; Diagnostic Tools; Efficacy of AEDs; When to Start and Stop AED Therapy; Adverse Events; Women's Issues; Case Workshops; Latest AEDs; Panel Discussion, Evening Case Sessions-participant presentations.

Saturday - Non-Epileptic Seizures; Epilepsy in Special Populations; Case Workshops; Depression and Suicide in Epilepsy; Clinical Management; Intractable Epilepsy; Video EEG Workshops; Generic Formulations.

Sunday - Breakfast/Flight home

PARTICIPANT COSTS
Tuition and meals for this program are provided through unrestricted educational grants. Participants are responsible for transportation and lodging expenses. Participants are eligible for a group package rate of $225.00 ($75.00 per night). Payment is required to secure your reservation. Payment instructions and other details will be included in your confirmation letter upon acceptance to the program. Assistance with making travel arrangements is available from our conference coordinator on request. Graylyn Conference Center provides a shuttle service to Piedmont Triad International Airport for $25.00 each way.
